Ministry of Justice Contract Win for VMI Security & Twofold Security

November 15, 2023

Press Release

February 2023 – VMI Security, a specialist in security solutions, has won a four-year contract with the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) to install its cutting-edge security scanners in UK prisons. Working with its UK partner, Twofold Security, the company is initially installing its X-Ray bag scanners across 45 prisons around the UK.

After winning a competitive contracting bid in which the equipment was rigorously analysed, VMI Security and Twofold Security, who are experts in inspection solutions, are now working with the MoJ to install the first scanners, largely at prison gates. The installation began in January, with completion of the first 83 scanners due before the end of March 2023.

The high-quality, sharp images of the scanners are aimed at thwarting illegal items such as drugs and mobile phones from getting beyond the prison gates.

VMI's X-Ray inspection equipment can identify threats through artificial intelligence, integrated video monitoring of the inspection process, real-time self-diagnosis, and being ONVIF approved, making it easy to integrate the device with the other assets registered in the security system.

Karen James, Twofold Security’s sales and marketing director, said: “We know that when mobile phones get beyond the prison gates this can pose a significant threat to security – such as prisoners using phones to continue their criminal activities, facilitating drug trafficking, and threatening witnesses or victims, and of course when it comes to drugs inside prisons, this will cause significant harm to both inmates and the wider society.”

Jonas Climaco, VMI Security’s director for operation and sales for Europe explained: “For us it has been a real success to secure this extremely important contract with the MoJ. It really was a competitive process, which looked at the quality of our services, supply chain, socio-environmental responsibility, and other aspects.

“We are proud to use our position and our high-tech equipment to really help the MoJ in its efforts to decrease all of these risks in a quest for a safer world both in prisons and outside.”

The Government has also posted a statement, which can be read in full here.
